How would you describe your style? Architectural, textured and playful, inspired by classic geometric forms and mid-century design.
Do you remember the first thing you made? In school I studied pottery, but wheel thrown. I think the first thing I made was a cup that I nearly tortured to death trimming and smoothing. I'm sure in the end it still weighed 5 pounds.
Before I started making I… I was the principal of an architectural lighting design studio. I have always had a deep appreciation for light and its effect on how you experience a space or place.
If I weren’t a maker I’d be... A gardener. I need to get my hands dirty: clay, dirt, mulch and I like that the process is similar. It requires planning, patience, hope and being okay with an unexpected result.
Favorite quote or words to live by: Less is more. Balancing restraint and creativity is key.
If you could collaborate with one person dead or alive who would it be? Louise Nevelson.
What would be on your maker’s soundtrack? Aretha Franklin, Gladys Night, Dusty Springfield and Dionne Warwick.
If you could learn a new skill what would it be? Lamp shade making.
What’s your favorite movie? Beetlejuice. I named a series of tiny sculptural lamps after Delia Deetz (played by the brilliant Catherine O'Hara)
What is your perfect day? A full day of yard work and gardening followed by sunset cocktails on the porch.
Last book you read? Toil & Trouble by Augusten Burroughs. It should be required reading for anyone who moves from the city to Northwest Connecticut.
What would your last meal be? Kevin's version of skillet chicken baked over fresh olive loaf from Bantam Bread.
Favorite scent? Le Labo Patchouli 24.
Favorite flower or tree? White Mountain Laurel.
Favorite artist? Alex Katz, I think of his painting Night House a lot.
What is the most challenging project you have worked on? Why? A wedding gift for friends. It was a personal project, a large bowl with a painted landscape in under glaze. I used a different clay and it was a scale I hadn't worked in before so the process became a comedy of errors.
What do you see outside your bedroom window? Magnolia trees in bloom.
What do you hear right now? The Bantam River through our open factory windows.
What was the last gift you gave someone? I keep giving Kevin the daffodils our dog Friday tramples in the yard. He's over it.
Best piece of advice you have ever received? It’s okay to say no. But I rarely do.
Where did you grow up? The Jersey shore.
Favorite time of day? Dinner time.
Favorite holiday? Summertime.
What is your most treasured possession? My wedding band.
What song best describes your work ethic? The Pointer Sisters, Automatic
What are you most thankful for? Kevin. (Love story aside), we wouldn't have created our company if he hadn't encouraged me from the beginning. He bought me pottery classes at a small studio for a Christmas gift which is how this all started.
