How would you describe your style? Visceral, raw, emotional.
Do you remember the first thing you made? A large scale installation of paper walls threaded with fiber, that moved with you as you walked between them.
Before I started making I… I worked at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
If I weren’t a maker I’d be... A poet.
Favorite quote or words to live by: Good things happen to those who hustle.
If I could run away I’d go… To the Hebrides in Scotland. It's such a wild and beautiful place.
If you could collaborate with one person dead or alive who would it be? Artemisia Gentileschi, I'd love to speak with her about how she channeled all of that feeling in to her paintings that were at once historical, and utterly personal. It would be amazing to abstract her paintings in fiber.
What would be on your maker’s soundtrack? Zoe Keating, Lucy Dacus, Bessie Smith; women whose music makes me feel all the things.
If you could learn a new skill what would it be? Welding so that I could develop more unique armatures for my work.
Last book you read? Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
Favorite artist? Doris Salcedo
What is the most challenging project you have worked on? Why? A gallery had a last minute opening and I threw together a solo show with almost entirely new work in about 8 weeks. Fiber is a pretty labor intensive medium, so it was an incredible challenge to execute quality work that pushed my practice, in the timeline. I barely slept, redid entire pieces, scarred my hands. I would say yes again in a heartbeat.
What do you hear right now? The freight train rattling by my studio.
Best piece of advice you have ever received? As an artist, don't be afraid to ask the difficult questions of your own work.
Any hidden talents? I'm a professionally trained bookbinder and letterpress printer.
Favorite time of day? At night, when it's quiet; the world feels full of possibility and more inclined to be vulnerable when it's dark.
Favorite podcast? BBC Radio's In Our Time: History, they go so in depth and I'm such a history nerd.
What is your most treasured possession? Probably my old stone house, it was built in 1680, the chimneys smoke, the plaster is chipping, it’s drafty in the winter, but I love it still.
What are you currently watching? The Platform
What are you most thankful for? That I took a risk at the beginning of my career to make work I wasn't seeing in the world, and I stuck with it in spite of fear.
