How would you describe your style? At Nikari we are most inspired in finding perfect combinations of materials - solid wood - in its best use. We aim to create functional and durable products that are esthetically pleasing, in other words: good design. Our background in Nordic design and craftsmanship has its own effect, and thus the products are quite distinctively Scandinavian.

Do you remember the first thing you made? Kari has always been making something out of wood. The first thing he used to make as a child was "härkin", a sort of whisk made of the very top of a pine tree.

Before I started making I… Kari started working as a cabinet maker apprentice at a very young age, 13 years. Before (and during) that he was at school. Jenni worked as a product designer at another company, and Johanna was working as a head of product development, sales and marketing before Nikari times.

If I weren’t a maker I’d be... Kari would be a wilderness guide.

Favorite quote or words to live by: Jenni's favorite words to live by: "Treat everyone and everything as you would like to be treated. I am not religious, but for me this is living in harmony, with people and nature.

If I could run away I’d go… If Johanna would run away, she would most likely go to stay in the Finnish archipelago and enjoy the beautiful scenery...in the summertime.

If you could collaborate with one person dead or alive who would it be? Jenni would have really wanted to meet Kari's early collaborating partners, the Finnish masters in architecture and design: the late Alvar Aalto and Kaj Franck.

What would be on your maker’s soundtrack? For Kari it is classical music mainly, Jenni prefers heavy and progressive Finnish music and Johanna listens to all kinds of music from antique arias to the latest pop songs.

If you could learn a new skill what would it be? Kari would like to learn to play a new instrument that he would first build himself. Jenni would like to learn new languages, Italian or French.

What’s your favorite movie? Kari's favorite movie is The man without a past by Aki Kaurismäki.

What is your perfect day? Kari would say "going fishing with my 7-year-old granddaughter". Jenni's perfect Thursday was working at the home office, afternoon riding and in the evening a dinner filled with laughter and playing together with the children. For Johanna now in the springtime it would be a sunny Sunday with a proper, long morning coffee together with the Sunday paper, forest and seashore hikes with the dog, puzzles and discussions with family and in the end some gardening, of course.

Last book you read? Kari: Even Through a Stone Wall: The Autobiography of Oskari Tokoi (a Finnish-born senator in the US). Jenni: Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben. Johanna: Thinking fast and slow by Daniel Kahneman.

What would your last meal be? Kari: Anything made of fish, or any sea food basically. Jenni: Vegetable soup and rye bread. Johanna: Grilled salmon with asparagus and new potato salad.

Favorite scent? Favorites for all of us: The hinoki tree scent, fresh laundry, and cinnamon buns in the oven.

Favorite flower or tree? For Kari the favorite tree would be any tree he is working on at the moment, a tree that grows in the nearby forests and brings a lot of inspiration. Jenni loves the apple trees in the spring, the beautiful white flowers (and of course the apples), and Johanna thinks the colorful maple trees in the autumn are wonderful.

What is the most challenging project you have worked on? Why? For Kari the most challenging project was the mobile INTERMUNDIUM MACHINE XVIII by Daniel Libeskind 1988 - a great piece of art, made of wood.

Best piece of advice you have ever received? For Jenni it would be: “If there is no solution for the problem, go for a walk.”

Favorite family tradition? Kari: When all the children and grandchildren are gathered together to prepare a good meal, we spend time together and afterwards play a good game or two. Jenni: Often on the weekends we pack a lunch and go hiking to a forest nearby. We have a beautiful spot just next door on a very high cliff. Lunch always tastes better there. Johanna: Our family holidays together are the best, we enjoy each others’ company a lot and have so much fun with my husband and three children.

Most interesting thing in your liquor cabinet? Kari: Self-made rotgut... and Jenni always has a bottle of high quality whisky available. Johanna has some special limited edition vodka and sake bottles with such special design bottles that they can never ever be consumed.

Favorite thing to cook? Kari is a master in coal grilled herring, Jenni likes to prepare vegetarian Mexican food that also tastes good for the young ones of the family. In the summertime Johanna is a fan of grilling fish and seafood and experimenting with crispy salads to go with them.

What are you most thankful for? We are all thankful for the clean nature and pure air around us, health and lovely families we have. Also the great creative team and ideology behind Nikari are sources of inspiration every day.
