How would you describe your style? My style is clean yet sculptural. Influenced by contemporary appropriation of industrial materials, then reinterpreted through the integration of nature, sculptural elements and precious materials.
Do you remember the first thing you made? Yes, the first piece of furniture I made was a coffee table. I made it with a friend for our art studio when I was still living in Switzerland.
Before I started making I… I was a sculptor.
If I weren’t a maker I’d be... I’d be a journalist / war correspondent.
Favorite quote or words to live by: “Make it nice!” A friend of mine, the Artist/Director Mac Premo overheard me say this to my assistant once, and recently he told me that his studio team now says it all the time. The are good words to live by.
If I could run away I’d go… Tahiti
If you could collaborate with one person dead or alive who would it be? Hans Ruedi Giger. When I was 17, I worked at a lithographers in Zurich that was printing his book at the time. He was a very interesting man.
What would be on your maker’s soundtrack? That’s impossible for me to define. I listen to everything.
If you could learn a new skill what would it be? Recently I’ve been toying with the idea of going back to working in ceramics.
What would your last meal be? A good spaghetti carbonara.
Favorite flower or tree? Japanesse Maple
What do you hear right now? Voices in the hallway of my Studio.
What was the last gift you gave someone? A beautiful Simone Bodmer-Turner vase for my wife.
Best piece of advice you have ever received? “If you love doing something, persevere, keep at it. It will pay off”. My old boss in Zurich said this to me, and he was right.
Where did you grow up? I grew up in Zurich, Switzerland
Favorite time of day? 5pm when the afternoon sun hits the windows of my Brooklyn Studio.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be? To take other peoples superpowers?
Most interesting thing in your liquor cabinet? We have a bottle of 15yr old Moonshine from Georgia (the country, not the state). My friend’s Grandmother made it, it’s ridiculously strong.
Favorite thing to cook? Roast Chicken
What are you currently watching? My brilliant friend, currently on HBO
What are you most thankful for? I’m most thankful for deciding to come to New York. I met my wonderful wife Tamika here, I made my home here, it was here in New York where I became inspired to design and make furniture.
