How would you describe your style? Such a hard question! I hope that my work is functional, thoughtful and thought provoking.
Do you remember the first thing you made? Yes! When I was 8 years old. I wove a scarf on my toy loom. It took me forever and I wore it until it fell apart.
Before I started making I… I worked in the fashion industry.
If I weren’t a maker I’d be... An architect, a painter, an archeologist, a travel writer.....
Favorite quote or words to live by: “Creativity is the residue of time wasted.” Albert Einstein
If I could run away I’d go… I’ve done that a few times in my life already, once to Italy after college and then to America. I’m done with running away. New York is where I belong.
If you could collaborate with one person dead or alive who would it be? The first person that comes to mind is Anni Albers. Then Kate Bush. I have no idea what that would look like! She has been an enduring influence and her music meant so much to me growing up. To work through a creative process with her would be fascinating.
What would be on your maker’s soundtrack? Right now I’m listening to Nick Mulvey, First Mind. I find it soothing and calming in these strange times. My go-to all-time favorite is Kate Bush.
If you could learn a new skill what would it be? I am desperate to learn some woodworking skills! I work at Supersmith in Redhook, Brooklyn and they have an amazing wood shop. I am itching to learn how to use all of the equipment.
What is your perfect day? In my studio playing with new ideas or hiking upstate.
Last book you read? Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano. The best book I’ve read in a long long time.
What would your last meal be? Pasta Fredda: fresh tomatoes, basil, garlic, olive oil and pasta. The taste of summer!
Favorite scent? Lavender or sandlewood depending on my mood.
Favorite flower or tree? Silver birch
Favorite artist? Bill Viola, Pia Camil, Anni Albers, Oscar Murillo, El Anatsui, Andy Goldsworthy…..my list is endless.
What do you see outside your bedroom window? An ancient pear tree.
What do you hear right now? The wind in the trees
Who’s the most famous person you’ve ever met? Beyonce! Because of a beautiful freind, Yosra El Essawy who made magic happen and whom I never stop missing.
What was the last gift you gave someone? A porcelain wind chime with silver milagro.
If money was not a factor how would you live your life? Split between Upstate and Brooklyn.
Favorite podcast? The Future Is Beautiful
Any hidden talents? I’m a pretty good handywoman.
Where did you grow up? Birmingham in the U.K.
Favorite time of day? Early morning when the city is still asleep.
Favorite holiday? Thanksgiving because it’s the best of Christmas but without the crazy consumerism.
What is your most treasured possession? A photo of my grandmother.
Favorite thing to cook? Soups. I love all kinds of soups from all over the world.
What are you currently watching? The Repair shop. It makes me cry- in a good way.
What are you most thankful for? My family and friends, my husband, my incredible children from whom I’m always learning and the fact I get to wake every morning and make something new.
